8.   Brief History of the Central Council :

St. Joseph’s Conference, Palayam, Trivandrum was the neucleus of the Trivandrum Central Council and it was one of the earliest conferences of the society of St. Vincent De Paul that was started in India. This conference was established on 24th November 1878 and its first President was BRO. FRANK WATTS who was then the Chief Secretary to Government of Travancore. The Conference did remarkable service to the poor. Later three more conferences were formed in the present Trivandrum Diocese area. Finding the need for more conferences, the Trivandrum Particular Council formed four more conferences in 22nd may 1966. The Trivandrum Particular Council was placed under the newly formed Verapoly Central Council. There was an increasing response from the parishes for establishing Vincentian conferences, thanks to the keen interest and efforts of His Lordship BISHOP PETER B. PEREIRA of Trivandrum. Finding there were sufficient number of conferences, the Verapoly Central Council suggested the formation of a Central Council exclusively for Trivandrum Diocese.

On 26th August 1972, the Trivandrum Particular Council elected Bro. J.T. Morais as the President of the proposed central council. He was a well-known social worker and a former member of the Legislative Assembly of Kerala. The National Council of India approved it on 22nd November 1972 and the Office was inaugurated by Dr. Van Ruiten who was on a tour in India especially in Trivandrum on 25th January 1975 for this purpose. Thus, now it has 135 conferences of which 99 twinned conferences.
