5. Brief History of the Central Council
In the year 1974 marks the beginning of Vincentions activities in the Tellicherry Diocese. The first conference of St. Vincent De Paul society in Tellicherry was started in that year at St. Joseph’s parish Edapuzha by the Carmelites fathers of the CMI Ashram. Most Catholics under Tellicherry diocese were migrants from the Pala diocese. So the members of Pala Central Council took keen interest to start conferences in Tellicherry Diocese and thus extended the horizon of Vincention activities in Kerala.. By the end of 1977, 35 conferences were established in the Diocese. Thus the Tellicherry Circle (PC) was formed under the Pala Central Council and Bro.P.J.Mathew was elected as the P C President. He took initiative for further increase in the number of conferences. Bro.P.J.Zacharias, President of Pala C C evinced keen enthusiasm in raising the states of Tellicherry P C into a C C and his efforts bore fruit within a short span of time. The Central Council of Tellicherry came into existence in 1978. Mar. Sebastian Valloppilly the Bishop of Tellicherry inaugurated the new Central Council on 24th April 1978 at the meeting held at Thomapuram. Bro.V.M.Mathai Vadakkeaimanamkuzhy was unanimously elected as the first president of Tellicherry Central Council.
Bro.V.M.Mathai visited almost all the parishes and established conferences under them. The following 9 circles ( P C ) came into existence. They were Mariapuram, Koodaranhi, Kulathuvayal, Maruthomkara, Peravoor, Edoor, Chempery, Alakode and Thomapuram.
Tellicherry Central Council was bifurcated in 1987 and Thamarassery Central Council came into being with the P Cs of Mariapuram, Koodaranhi, Kulathuvayal, Maruthomkara and Devagiei. Bro. Eyo was nominated as the President of Thamarassery Central Council.
A technical institute was started at Kilianthara with the support and aid of Tellicherry Social Service Society. The institute was intended to help the poor youths in learning useful trade and enable them to stand on their own feet. Training in carpentry and welding was given at the institute. Non availability of students for the courses caused for the closure of the institute in the year 2004.
In memory of the silver jubilee of the C C and golden jubilee of the Tellicherry Arch Diocese, a new home for the poor old couples – VICENTIAN BHAVAN - was started at Malamkadave near Palavayal under the supervision of Thomapuram and Cherupuzha PCs. It was inaugurated on the feast day of St.Vincent De Paul ( 27th Sept 2003 ) by Bro. A.M.Mathai President of Kerala Regional Council. We have purchased 35 cents of land at Nallompuzha near Chittarikal in Kazergod dist. and started the construction of the home. The foundation stone was laid by Very Rev.Msgr.Mathew .M.Chalil Vicar General Tellicherry Archdiocese on 5th Nov. 2005. and the ground flower of the building was blessed by Very Rev. Msgr..Joseph Karinatt Vicar General Tellicherry Arch Diocese on 8th Dece.2006.
There are many Projects run by the conferences by themselves and with the help of overseas Twin Conferences. Coffin making, Garment making, Tailoring Institutes, Supply of Tailoring machines, Cow- bank, Goat- bank, Type writing institutes etc are some of them.
Tellicherry Diocese was bifurcated in the year 1999 and Belthangady Diocese was formed. Since there aren’t sufficient aggregated conferences to form a new CC, Belthangady continued as a PC till 2006.The National council of India in its letter dated 26.10.2006 bifurcated Tellicherry Central Council forming Belthangady as the 70th C C in India and nominated Bro.T.M.Xavier as the first president .
Now in Tellicherry Central Council there are 13 Area Councils (P C) and 136 conferences. All of them are functioning smoothly.
