The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Coimbatore Central Council office bearers decided to establish OZANAM HOME FOR THE AGED. The Vincentians first approached three well-wishers and purchased 1.4 acres of land with 75% of the land freely donated for the noble cause.
The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony was held on 18.02.2004 with the Vicar General Msgr, Fr. Jerome blessing the foundation stone, and Bro. Jim Mc Daid, National President of England & Wales and Bro. T. Joseph Pandian, National President of India laying the Foundation Stone. The construction work progressed and Dr. A.Q.C. Van Ruiten, Chairman, Overseas Committee, Netherlands obtained Rs. 350 lakhs through Joca Foundations, Netherlands and sponsored the Kitchen and Dining Hall.
Mrs. & Mr. Titchmarsh through the National Council of England & Wales donated Rs. 8 lakhs and sponsored one wing of the building. The local well-wishers and donors donated around Rs. 14.50 lakhs in cash and kind. As on date Rs. 26 lakhs has been spent on the building. The Ozanam Home was blessed by his Excellency Most Rev. Dr. L. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop of Coimbatore and opened by our National President on 24th July 2005.
The Ozanam Home for the Aged is located 15 KMs away from Coimbatore City in a quiet atmosphere adjoining Sambarani Kuttai, a hamlet where there are 125 poor backward families residing. The land 1.40 acres is fenced with wire-mesh. The built up area (RCC) is 7,500 sq.ft. costing approximately Rs.32 lakhs and it would house around 50 elderly people. The Coimbatore Central Council was established only on 30-08-1998 and within this short span of 7 years it has ventured into this major Project to house 50 elderly people and also to give technical training to poor students.
The aim of Society of St. Vincent de Paul “To Serve His Poor” is predominant in their minds. The Ozanam Home for the Aged stands as a symbol of Love for His Poor.
