6. Brief History of the Central Council:
On March 2nd, 2003 Kothamangalam Diocese was divided and the Idukki Diocese came into being. On 07-06-2003 the Kothamangalam Central Council was divided and the Idukki Central Council came into existence. The inauguration of the new Central Council was done by the Idukki Bishop Rt.Rev.Dr. Mathew Anikizhikatil at Kalvarimount.
Idukki Diocese consists of Udumbanchola Tahsil, past of Thodupuzha and Deviculam Tahasils. Idukki Diocese in blessed with the natural beauty of small and big hillocks. The main crops of the people are cardamon, pepper, coffee, tea, coconut and arickanuts etc. The majority of the people are below poverty line. To reach Idukki, you have to reach Nedumbassery International Airport by plane. From there you have to take bus passing by Kothamangalam to Idukki and get down Karimban. If you come by train you have to alight at Aluva and catch a bus passing by Kothamangalam to Idukki and get down at Karimban.
The main business centres of Idukki are; Kattappana, Adimaly, Nedumbandam and Parathode. The important tourist centres are; Thekkady wild life sanctuary, Munnar, Eravikulam and Idukki. The first Indian Arch Dam is Idukki Arch Dam. The majority of the people are Christians. The diocese has 112 churches and the central council has 82 conferences. These 82 conferences work under 8 particular councils.
7. Activities of Idukki:-
Now Idukki Diocese has a new Central Council. It is known as "IDUKKI CENTRAL COUNCIL" The council provides some good social services here. Now we have a Cancer Pain & Pallative centre at Murickassery. The members, who are belong to Idukki 'Central Council' are visiting the Cancer Centre daily. They provide food and cloth to them. Always they are praying for the sake of Cancer Patients.
