Earthquake in North India

You know already by now about the recent earthquake in the state of Jammu & Kashmir which destroyed many lives and damaged houses and properties of innocent people of the area of Barammulla, Uri, Punj and other villages of Kashmir. Already a team from the Caritas India is working in those areas and looking after the immediate need of the affected people of those areas. We have SSVP conferences working in Jammu. These conferences are under the guidance of Chandigarh Central Council. I am in touch with the Chandigarh Central Council President  Sr. Saupin. She has contacted Bishop Peter Celestine Bishop of Jammu. According to Bishop Peter Celestine, the immediate need of the people is some Blankets and Utensils. Sr. Saupin is arranging these blankets and utensils through her school children's parents. She has told me that she has already sent a circular to the parents for their assistance . By Monday or Tuesday (17th or 18th Oct. 05) these materials will be taken to Jammu by  Bro. Vincent of Chandigarh Central Council and will distribute to the needy through the Bishop of Jammu. In the meantime I have also asked Bro. Vincent to asses the situation of the area and consult the Bishop of Jammu for constructing or repairing the houses for affected people. At least 40 to 50 houses could be taken up for repair or the SSVP construct Fully damaged houses with the guidance of the Bishop. I think it will be a real help to those innocent People of the area. I think the National Council could fund the expenses of the proposed project. I will be going to Chandigarh on Sunday the 23 Oct. 2005 and I hope to get the clear picture of the proposal. I feel a minimum of Rs. 8000/- to 100000/- will cost per house. I have also asked Bro. Vincent to give the detailed information as soon as he returns from Jammu, may be by the end of the coming week.
